    Aims

    This course reflects the national occupational standard for a low risk confined space environment where access is simple and unobstructed. It covers both water and non-water industry areas.


    Water


    This may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

    Non-water

    This may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.


    Please be aware that the safe working load (SWL) of person & equipment combined during the practical session of this course is 136KG.


    The following SWL is applicable minus the equipment:

    6160-01 Low Risk: 135KG.

    • Operation of a safe system of work
    • Following a method statement

    Assessment:

    • Practical observation - top entry no deeper than 3 metres
    • Undertaking risk assessments throughout the exercise to identify hazards
    • Responding to risks and hazards
    • Dealing promptly with emergencies
    • 90 minute full written assessment

    This course is aimed at anyone working in a low risk environment and includes preparing to work safely, entering and exiting low risk confined spaces safely, safe use of equipment and tools, following procedures and dealing with emergencies.


    This qualification allows you to work inside a low risk confined space, however it does not qualify you to be an Entry Controller for low risk work. If you wish to be an entry controller for low risk, you will need to book onto the

    6160-09 Level 2 Award in Entrant and Entry Controller for confined spaces - (Medium Risk) training course.


    Additional Support

    Any additional support (reader/scribe) must be pre-arranged and evidence submitted to City & Guilds before the start of the course – This cannot be done on the day
